Apparently, choosing an Open Source solution does not scare many companies anymore. Still, to be suitable, the solution has to meet the needs of the employees.
Open Source seems now to be considered as an essential technology. According to Gartner analyst company, during the coming years, the Open Source will grow much faster than proprietary commercial platforms.
The 2010 edition of Decideo Forum about Open Source has confirmed this trend: the corporate interest in open source solutions has clearly increased. This phenomenon has already been noticed before but there has been a recent evolution of the role of open source within companies. Indeed, computing decision-makers now prefer to use selectively open technologies that best suit their needs by integrating them into their infrastructure. This represents a revolution in the open source micro culture. On the contrary, just last year, most of the companies had a radical position towards Open Source. They would have used either open source solutions or proprietary ones but not both.
The knowledge in terms of Open Source has also increased significantly. People in companies are aware of the areas of application and limitations of these technologies. For most of them, the price remains a key criterion in the choice of Open Source. However, they now know that these technologies have a cost and they know why.
