Press Release

Brasília, Paris, Dakar, Tokyo, August 26th 2010. The Free Cloud Alliance, the pioneer alliance of software publishers of open source solutions for Enterprise Cloud Computing, has launched at the opening ceremony of CONSEGI 2010 the “UNG is not Google” project. CONSEGI 2010 is the largest international open source conference in the world with a strong focus on e-government and Cloud Computing. The “UNG is not Google” project aims at building a complete alternative to Google's proprietary business model and technologies, starting from enterprise application and ending with Internet search engine.

Jean-Paul Smets, President of the Free Cloud Alliance, says “Government and enterprises demand complete control, privacy and trustability over sensitive data. Control, privacy and trustability is something which most proprietary Cloud Computing vendors can not provide either because of Patriot Act and anti-corruption Laws or simply because sensitive data is being aggregated, analyzed and sold to undisclosed third parties as part of their business model. Control, privacy and trustability is what the UNG project will provide: user friendly solutions with total data portability, complete access to source code in GPL compatible license and absence of vendor lockin. UNG project will bring Trust, Freedom and Competition in the Cloud Computing market removing all lock-in factors.”

Rafael Monnerat, Secretary of the Free Cloud Alliance, explains “The UNG project is based on core technologies created by founding members of the Free Cloud Alliance, namely Niftyname IaaS and TioLive PaaS. UNG also leverages third party open source projects such as JQuery, Asterisk, Psi, OpenOffice, etc. Demonstrations of Web ERP, CRM, ERDMS, Web mail, VOIP, Chat, Web office, e-goverment forms and specialized search engine were made during CONSEGI 2010 to government officials who currently worry about the sovereignty risks posed by proprietary approaches for Cloud Computing.”

Jean-Paul Smets concludes “UNG project is open and modular. UNG Web services and software components are designed to be used standalone and independently one each other. Any UNG Web service can be replaced or complemented with third party Web service which provides same or better features than UNG does, as long as it fits within UNG Single Sign On framework. UNG may itself provide multiple services to cover the same feature, just like GNU/Linux distributions do. Our goal is to provide choice, freedom, consistency and long term reliability.”
